iMessage group chats:
Planning an event with a college friends gang? Creating a group chat to post the updates about the lecture notes? When the group is limited to our close people, we can easily create it.
For example, I would like to create an iMessage app group with 6 friends named “Birthday Party“. To do this:
- Open the iMessage app on your iPhone or iPod Touch;
- Go to iMessage app > People;
- Swipe left on a friend until you get to Create iMessage App Group;
- Enter Birthday Party in “Group Name” field;
- Invite people by entering their iMessage account addresses (their phone numbers);
- Change the iMessage picture and tap Save.
It’s that simple. Now you can post all the Birthday event updates and share the photos with your friends. You can even wish the birthday boy with the Balloon animations and other effects in wishes.
It’s absolutely fun. But wait? How many people can be added to a single group chat?
iMessage Group Chat Limit
But a few messaging apps have limitations on how many people can be on group text.
iMessage app is no exception to it. An iMessage app group has a maximum size of 32 participants across all devices. You can’t add more than 32 members to a group chat.
An iMessage app group name can only contain alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9) and hyphens ( – ). The iMessage app doesn’t allow spaces or emoji characters in iMessage group names.
If you’re setting up a group chat, follow these steps: 1.) Open Settings on your iOS device; 2.) Tap Messages; 3.) Tap the name of the iMessage app group you want to change; 4.) Tap Add iMessage app Group Names; 5.) Enter iMessage app group names and tap Done.
When you create an iMessage app group, you can add up to 32 people from your contacts list, as well as their associated iMessages with their messages ids (iMessage-IDs).
Group assignment is done by entering the phones numbers or email addresses of fellow members using their exact names. Using special characters like commas or space during this process won’t result in errors. iMessage app groups can be created using iMessage messages, iMessage iMessages or iMessage iMessages. The data sent and received by a particular member is only visible to them alone. The iMessage group chat owner has the authority to accept or reject any person from joining their iMessage app group. In case someone leaves an iMessage app group, their entry gets removed from the recipient list as well as from the “the other members” list of that Group Chat.

You can also use affect like Balloons, Confetti, other animation and bubble effects with iMessage group chat. This works quite similar to that of WhatsApp group chat. The number of people allowed in the group chat for iMessage is 32.
On the other hand, Group Message is the normal group chat that your carrier supports. Message sent with this appears with Green bubbles. You cannot send multi-media content like Photos, videos etc with this and these messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Group SMS chat limit is basically varies depending on the carrier. Few of the carriers supports up to 100 members in the group chat and a few other carriers like Verizon doesn’t have any limitations on the number of people can be in a group text.
